The word, like-mindedness, means to have similar tastes or opinions, and to be generally going in the same direction. The Greek word for like-mindedness, omopsychías, comes from two words: equal and soul. Together they give us the word picture of unity, harmony, and general agreement together.
Like-mindedness means that we go in generally the same direction as those you serve alongside of because you see things generally the same way. When disagreements come, you work them out, and you move forward for the cause of Jesus Christ. What a blessing for you, your family, your church and for your pastor to be serving alongside people who love the flock and are like-minded!
It can be difficult to remain like-minded, and that’s why the Bible contains many passages with encouragement to help us remain like-minded as we serve.
Philippians 2:1–4 (NKJV) “Therefore if there is any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any affection and mercy, fulfill my joy by being like-minded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.”
Like-mindedness is important for a smooth God-honoring ministry. The lack of like-mindedness brings confusion and chaos.
Pray and ask the Lord for a like-minded heart with those whom you serve alongside of. Remember: Like-mindedness is not blind allegiance. You are never to have the attitude that you are a faithful soldier who doesn’t ask questions. Serving in the body of Christ means there is room for your input. There’s room for where you are in life, where you’ve come from, what God’s doing in your heart, what God has spoken to you, what you’ve gained through your devotions, and what you’ve seen through your Bible reading. These things are valuable in making you the servant God uses.
However causing division and wanting to do things that are divisive, is always sinful, and it’s better that you find a like-minded ministry to join. That way you will be unhindered in exercising your spiritual gifts for His glory and the Body’s good.
